my dog has been going to Banfield since 2005 under their plan. they say preventive care, my dog has had the same problem for awhile nobody can tell me anything every time i go i get meds and pay more money. now my dog can't walk and in order to find out why he can't walk they want more money.for what ? in all these years of preventive care they didn't see the problem before he couldn't walk. Yet they will still go to my account to get their money for their plan. I went to my computer in 10min found the problem for free, But i can't afford to go to another vet. Banfield will take your money and and if you aren't careful kill your pet

Weedee - I had a very similar problem... see my recent post. I went home, called another vet, and they knew exactly what the problem was. I also looked online and in 10 minutes had all of the info I needed that could have avoided 600 dollars in banfield tests that told us nothing. This place is a first rate scam!

Regarding Tink's statement. You state that you spayed your dog despite the medical advice recommending that you do another skin scrape. As a result, the mange came back which is not surprising. The veterinarians offered their opinion, you chose not to follow it, and as a result, the disease worsened. This sounds like it was your choice, not the veterinarians. You may state that you didn't have the money for the scrape, but that is not the fault of the veterinarian. They are employees of the Banfield corporation and must charge for their services as required. If you can not afford them, then it would be best to shop around rather than go against medical advice. As for the cost of the ivermectin, again, that is the cost that Banfield charges. I sincerely doubt that anyone regular goes to the feed store to compare prices so that they can tell their customers where to get stuff cheaper. Do you expect employees at Best Buy to tell you to NOT buy that TV here because you can get it cheaper at Wal Mart? They offered you their product and you can choose to buy it from them or shop around. You shopped around and purchased it for cheaper. Good for you. I doubt they even knew you could get it from a feed store and it's not really their job to know that. It's their job to tell you what medications your dog needs. Regarding the skin scrape, if it is so quick and easy to do it, then I suggest you perform it and evaluate it yourself. If you feel that using a veterinarian's expertise for a diagnostic procedure isn't worth the cost, then don't do it. Just don't be surprised when the outcome isn't what you'd hoped.

Weedee, I'm sorry your dog can't walk. However, I sincerely doubt you've determined the cause of your dogs problems in 10 minutes by surfing the web (full of medical mistatements), while licensed veterinarians could not determine your problem. Like it or not, some medical problems can be difficult to diagnose. If veterinary medicine were easy, anyone could do it. Preventative medicine, as it sounds, helps prevent certain issues. Vaccinations prevent serious illnesses, dewormings prevent severe worm infestations etc. However, nothing can prevent dogs from getting older and getting old dog diseases such as arthritis, kidney failure etc. With preventative medicine, it can be detected earlier and addressed, but just like human medicine, you can't prevent a dog from getting old and dying. If you weren't happy with the care you were receiving from the Banfield, then by all means, see another veterinarian. But to say that Banfield will take your money and kill your pet, given your story, is a bit exaggerated and ridiculous.

i dont know what to think about that.I got a puppy last Feb.,she was 2 mos. old,we got her from a shelter.WI took her to banfield 4 shots ect-they said her skin was dry n might hav mange n theyd keep an eye on it-sure enuf she did-i could pay to dip her 3 Xs at $80 ea. or put her on oral ivermectin at $60 a bottle so thats what i did-its the same stuff as heartworm med so she didnt need that-she was at the age to b fixed n we didnt want her to go in heat cause it would b more traumatic 4 her but we couldnt do it if she still had mange-but the only way to tell is to scrape her skin n look at it under a microscope for $35-i didnt hav the $ n her hair was growin back so i said lets do it-i was hopin theyd cut me a break n just do the test-i was payin them $22 a mo. plus $60 a bottle 4 Ivermactin,$16 4 fish oil food supplement n around $16 4 prescription shampoo, but they didnt.Needless to say after she was fixed n off the meds, the mange came back n we had to start ALL OVER w the ivermec(u hav to start at a low dose n gradually increase it to the dose that actually kills the mange-or u could kill her)so i bought another $60 bottle of ivermec n then found out (cause i live near farms)that i could get the same amount of it at a feed store for$30!!!!So i did n asked them to mix it w syrup 4 me n they did-that $30 bottle was the last 1 i had to buy-its finally gone-imagine the $ i couldve saved if they had told me about the feed store! It takes 5 minutes maybe 10 to scrape a piece of skin n look at it under a mic,n even less time to simply TELL me ivermec is cheaper at a feed store-i cant help but wonder if a private vet that isnt worried about sales quotas wouldve been more understanding of my financial situation-n more concerned 4 my pets health*
