Banfield tried to charge us $1200.00 to treat a dog we rescued which tested positive for Heartworms. I found two other local veteranarians that would do treatment for between $120-$200. Banfield didn't have anything to say other than the $1200 is their cost....

Heartworm is a potentially fatal condition - this is not something to take the 'cheap' treatment option with or you risk your dogs life.

To correctly, in accordance with high medical standards & guidelines, work-up and treat this condition you are looking at needing multiple x-rays, hospitalized rest, a series of injections and medications, and pre/follow-up bloodwork. That being said, $1200 is at the high end of the cost range, so if you called some reputable local practices you could probably do better, BUT MAKE SURE THEY ARE FOLLOWING THE CORRECT TREATMENT GUIDELINES, because it sounds impossible to do so for ~$200 - they are probably just giving the bare minimum.....which is risky!

Banfield Pet Hospital in Portland, Oregon - Watch out your pockets

We signed up with Vancouver WA Banfield for our dog, hopefully to save some money on Vet's bill. It's a joke!!! The Vet makes us to drop our dog for check up and then charge us for boarding... For every little thing, she wants to run tests/labs/x-rays and we end up to pay extra for unnecessary things. We are now so afraid to tell her anything wrong with our dog. The most ridiculous thing is that this Vet wants to charge $15 per prescription if you want to save money fill it some where else.

Banfield Pet Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana - Animals nor humans have rights to affordable health care

Its really very sad that it all comes down to the money issue. I really hope that human health care doesnt start doing the same thing. There are so many animals that need health care and cant get it just because their owners cant afford it. Why arent there institutions for animals to get health care at an affordable price or at least on payment. Everybody keeps talking about animal population is out of control but yet animal lovers like my self have a hard time paying for medical bills for animals. Especially when your a human and in bad health and they wont even help you. I really dont know what this world is coming to, it suppost to be filled with human kindness for all living things. I really dont see that anymore anywhere. World is becoming a big disaster!

To: A pet owner;

If you cannot afford to pay for a "child's" medical expenses, you should not have a "child." "Children" are very expensive to have.

And yet, I don't see anyone telling those people to stop having children. (You actually pay for those people to continue reproducing... Let me introduce you to a concept called "Welfare," a plan available because of the average, hard-working American's tax dollars.)

If you cannot afford to pay for "your own" medical expenses, you should not "go to the doctor." "Living" is very expensive.

And yet MILLIONS of people in this country, who don't pay into the system, go the doctor, get treated and go home...which leaves the rest of the people who ARE paying for medical insurance, who don't qualify for aid, to pay OUTRAGEOUS amounts of money for medical treatment.

So; Little more compassion. She is simply commenting on a situation that IS a problem; not asking for a free handout...like MILLIONS of people in this country. At least pets give back in the form of unwavering love, decreasing stress, increasing the life expectancy of their owners and the ability to bring a smile to the face of those with even the most hardened of hearts.

Maybe some of the BILLIONS of dollars that are being spent on freebies for humans should be redirected to aide for animal health and welfare. At least there would be a lot more joy in the world.

Pet ownership is not a right.

To all the comments.....Did you ever think that this person rescued the animal. Did you ever stop and think that maybe the owners circumstances changed, or the animal developed a chronic problem?

I think this person is wonderful for taking in a pet, when in fact the animal population is overwhelming.

Every creature has a right to live a happy and healthy life. Thank you lynn for sharing your thoughts and you are correct, there should be assistance just as there is assistance to people who don't work and keep reproducing.

If you cannot afford to pay for a pet's medical expenses you should not have a pet. Animals are very expensive to own.

If you can't afford a BMW why would you buy one? Same thing with pets!

Banfield Pet Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado - Banfield Unscrupulous Charges

I have been a customer of Banfield for several years with my pets on wellness plans and of late they have become increasingly careless and uncaring. I pay over $1300 a year and I am sick of them performing miscellaneuos unnecessary procedures or say the performed and charge me for or place miscellaneous items on my bills in hopes I don't question them. I took my dog in for a teeth cleaning and the intake tech told me that a cystocentesis was necessary. A urinalysis for a teeth cleaning??? NOT SO! This is for blood and urine panels on comprehensive yearly exams, which she just had hers a few months ago. They don't check their records, they just do whatever the computer tells them to do. I called them back and they apologized and took it off the bill, but only because I had caught them before they did it. Not to mention that there were several other items on the invoice that were totally unnecessary for a teeth cleaning. BE WISE when signing your pet over - all they want is your money!!!!

A Banfield in Pennsylvania almost killed my sister's 10 year old cat. She took him there when he was vomiting and lethargic, they told her he had diabetes, had her get insulin, give him shots, traumatize him, etc.

I told her to take him to our vet, Northern Pike Veterinary Hospital in Monroeville, PA who immediately discovered that the cat had swallowed a piece of plastic and needed surgery to remove it. He was NOT diabetic!! Still isn't a year later! This *** vet almost killed him, oh and she also recommended putting him to sleep, which caused my poor sister to go into hysterics, and now here we are a year later and the cat is fine.

Had she listened to Banfield, he'd be dead. I wouldn't take a sewer rat to any of these people let alone my beloved dogs and cat.

Banfield Pet Hospital in Bowie, Maryland - Banfield almost killed my puppy

I took my dog 4 month old5.4 lb maltese/cockerspaniel puppy to Banfield to have him neutered because they suggested to have it done before he turned 6 months old or the wellness plan wouldn't cover it. Once my puppy was home he was fine until the next day when I had to give him his medication (Ketoprofen), my puppy was vomitting and was very weak,so I went back to banfield to check him out and they gave him 4 more injections, I asked the doctor if him having these injections would cause more problems I was told no. Later that night my puppy had a seizure and was taken to the emergecny room and it was indicated that my puppy's kidneys were shutting down and that we had to pay the emergency almost 600 dollars before they would tough him or loose my puppy. I contacted Banfield to let them know what had happened and about trying to get my money back for the emergency room charges and they told me that we need to speak to the chief of staff which was conveniently on "vacation". I am very angry and want something done!!!!!

Same thing happened to my cat. I had to pay over $300 for the mess up the vet performed and another $600 for emergency services after my cat got worse.

Who is to blame in this matter. The Vet says it was my cat's fault because he bit and swallowed a piece of tubing.

Emergency says my cat was preped well before the procedure. What a RIP OFF.

Banfield Pet Hospital Charged Me Multiple times

I received a letter in August stating that Banfield was not able to charge my card for the Wellness Plan my two dogs were covered under. I contacted them on September 8 or 9, gave them a new card to charge, and all was well. The card was chargedagain a month later on October 6. This was a normal charge. Then I got a call mid-October and was told my account was past due for July, August, September and October. I explained I'd already talked to someone in September. The person i dealt with was rude and told me, "No, you didn't" [talking to someone that is]. I repeated it'd been taken care of and the person again virtually called me a liar. I gave them the same card I'd given the person in September. On review of my statement, I found that Banfield had charged my card October 20 for all four months even though I'd already been charged. I am really happy with the wellness plans and believe their concept is very good. However, apparently when something goes wrong, they cannot fix it and their customer service people are rude and inept.

The Banfield vet my husband & I took our chowchow to (Franklin, TN)removed a cancerous penile tumor & gave our dog chemo treatments. For a while he was doing well, until his liver enzymes were elevating during subsequent visits.

As a RN, I knew this was not normal. I kept telling the vet about it, but he would never recommend anything, but took a "wait & see" attitude. He waited until our chowchow was on death's door, because he filled up with 7.5L of abdominal fluid that was drained (cost $670-not covered by plan). Two weeks later he started bleeding due to a cancerous lesion on his liver.

We had to put him to sleep. When I spoke to another Banfield vet at another location, he stated that he would of taken liver enzyme tests, put our dog on a special diet, or whatever else he could of done, so his death would have not come so fast or severe as it did.

Do NOT go to the Banfield at Moores Ln in Franklin, TN. The vet is a quack.

I know exactly how you feel. I lost my dog a year ago.

She was 8 yrs old. Banfield told us she had a bladder infection. She was treated for 3 weeks with no improvement. We took her to another vet.

She passed away. They did an autopsy and said she died of heart failure.

Dr. David Schlereth is horrible.

He is only in it for the money. He does not care about the animals. He is rude and man-handled my poor cat. He gets pissed off if you refuse his very expensive extra services.

I dont know why anyone goes there.

Horrible, horrible man. Stay away.
