Banfield horrible costumer service

I had the most expensive plan that banfield offers for years. I found out that other companies were offering less for their services so i decided to cancel my plan. When i call the toll free number the agent Andrew was very rude and got upsat that i wanted to cancel the plan, he ended up hanging up the phone before finishing the service. I had to call back, waited long in the line to get somebody named Angela which was 10 times more rude than the first agent. She started to argue with me for no reason and she also hung up on me. Banfield over charge for everything and they always say the pet is sick. Once you make an appoitment you still have to wait very long time to see the vet. Do not get Banfield for your own sake. Horrible costumer service and very expensive.

Banfield sucks!

I had been a client at my Banfield for over six years and always had recommended it to friends and other people, who adopted dogs from me (I work for a local rescue group). From now on this will change drastically!

My dog was going to have a mass on his chest removed. In addition, I wanted them to look at a wart looking thing on his hip. When I picked up my dog, he had a 5 stitch wound on his thigh instead! No apology, nothing.

Instead, they called it a "misunderstanding", even though the clinic manager had seen the wart in the morning. I had to ask for the fees to be waived, which they eventually did. Two days later, my dog pulls out the stitches of the cut, which he should not have had in the first place! I brought him back to Banfield and filed a complaint, asking not to be charged for the restitching.

The clinic manager refused to meet me even half way, saying that it was my fault, because I basically let my dog pull out the stitches. Furthermore, she told me, that she is not giving me a freebie and that if I refuse to pay the full amount of $426, she will call a collection agency.

I ended up paying the full amount, cancelled my plan immediately and I will also gladly share my bad experiences with Banfield with others. They have proven to be incompetent, unfriendly, and unworthy to get my money.

Banfield is certainly not cheaper than other vets.

Why pay for bad service and get treated like *** on top of that! Shame on you, Banfield!

Banfield should have not charged for the dog' s stiches coming off!!those are poor business practices. Other vets would have not charged.

It is customary to be treated for the same issue at the same price until it is resolved, with anything even humans!!!!!Shame on Banfield, I also have questioned their practices in the past. No longer doing business with them canceling my plans tomorrow first thing. It is not cost effective anyhow. After ten months off making payments you have paid for services at another vets.

Am glad I found this Web site. I have 2 dogs 7 cats.

Babygirl - did you see where I was from before you posted? I've never met another local on here yet, hi-5 for Rockland, hope you & your family are OK after Sandy?

Sdfs - I'm not saying that they are faultless but it does sound like they tried to make up for what is mostl likely a miscommunication. If you mentioned the wart to them only on the day of Sx they may have thought you wanted it taken off as well. Either way they should have confirmed your intentions & any extra costs with you, so yes, they ate the cost of that extra surgery & time they used, as they should have.

Honestly thought the care of a pet once it is home is 100% up to the owner. I'm just saying that the blame here sounds like it is to be shared.

Guest

How did ur dog get its stitches out. If it happened at ur house whys that their fault

Guest

Meeting me "halfway" for something they messed up??? Dear Petcarer, I am glad that people like you post comments on the internet, because otherwise I would have no idea of how to take care of my dog. You don't know me or my dog, so please don't be too quick with your judgements.

Guest

I actually think it sounds like they tried to meet you halfway with waiving the additional mass removal fees over the misunderstanding.

As a pet owner it is YOUR job to take responsibility of YOUR pet once it is out of the hospital to make sure that it doesn't chew out stitches/open a wound.

The Vet can't babysit you 24/7.

Your pet should have been strictly rested & had a cone on at all times until the stitches were removed - did it??? Somehow I highly doubt it.

NEVER RETURNING OR RECOMMENDING!!!

My sister has two dogs, a chihuahua and a shih tzu and she has a plan with petsmart. she never recommended me but i still went since they had good deals sometimes. i have a little chihuahua, took him to the banfield to get his first shots. i made an appointment for 5pm. showed up at 450 for my appointment and was put on wait upon my arrival. i did not get helped untill 545 and then when the vet took me in, she kept leaving, in total i was there from 450 till almost 7. my dog ended up only getting one shot, the DAPP. but was charged for the corona shot also. i called banfield to let them know i was mistakenly charged for an extra shot my dog did not get. all they said was sorry and that they will give me a discount for next time. i was ok with it since my dog did need the shot. but kinda mad too. a friend from work told me about zamzows cheap shot, so i took my dog and got all his shots for less than $50. including the corona shot. weeks later i noticed my dog was getting a lump by his arm, and i called petsmart so my dog can checked and know what it was. i have a coupon for a free consultation visit. so i called petsmart to make an appointment and asked if they would take the coupon, they regected my coupon so i cancelled the app. they were so rude, and still... they owe me money. worse animal hospital ever. if you love your dog. take them to real vets.

For starters that vaccines is given in the upper right shoulder not the arm. And the lump that formed weeks later could not from the vaccine containing corona as a vaccine reaction will happen within the first 30 to 60 minutes. By the way I hope you got that DAPP CORONA vaccine booster 3 times otherwise enjoy your parvo!

TRIED TO RIP ME OFF!!!!

Quoted me $300 on first set of kitten shots. Tried to sell me "pet Insurance" to cover cost...lets see...$300 for pet insurance vs. $13 for rabies shot & $35 for feline leukemia shot...How *** do you think I am? They ARE NOT there to take care of your animal they are there to RIP YOU OFF!!!! Look for low cost vaccinations,Spay/neuter clinics on line (HSPCA). Even Petco was cheaper on vaccinations! For all 3 sets of kitten shots I was at less than $100...$100 on neutering- somehow still cheaper than what they quoted me for the first set of shots. Save your time & money and GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! Also note other posts, who complained of bad veterinary care on top of extreme pricing.

I will start off by saying you get what you pay for. The wellness plan is not pet insurance. It is a package you can pay out monthly.

Covers more than just 3 vaccines. It covers the spay/nueter (with bloodwork), FREE office visits, discounts, ALL rounds of shots, FIV test (which I bet you didn't get) as well as a comprehensive (thorough exam)fecal exams and deworming.

You cannot get any of these things at a low cot place. Like I said you get what you pay for.

Same as the above comments. It's common sense.

You can't just get services done then cancel the plan the next day and expect to get all your money refunded.

Once its done, its done. Ignorance.

Ditto to the above comment because legally you had to sign a consent form for any vaccines, deworming, fecal testing, FIV FELV testing and the office exam that they did, so you already signed for & approved those costs. You can ask for the recipt if you lost it/didnt keep it.When you add up the costs of those things it will prb add up to the $249. Puppies and kitten are expensive in the beginning if you take good care of them, lots of people just cut corners to save few bucks but youre not doing your pet anyfavors trying to be cheap

Guest

Well, yeah they probably did do $250 of work, which you signed for. Banfield always makes you sign a treatment plan before anything is done, but the subtotal would be "$0" since you signed up for a plan.

Think about it - your kitten had an exam, several vaccinations, deworming, FeLV/FIV test, fecal test, and maybe a few other things. Sorry you didn't understand.

CARE PLUS PLAN IS A RIP OFF/NO REFUND

I foolishly signed up for the "Care(Ha) Plan" for my puppy. I had an issue during the two visits I cancelled the 1 yr plan that I had paid for in full. I was in the plan for 13 days. The previously poster is correct. They make it sound like the fees for shots, meds, etc are discounted. They charge more money than a local vet and the care is substandard. Corporate does not know the meaning of refund, courtesy or customer relatiions. To make it breif - I was going to board my puppy at PetSmart and told the vet the day I wished to board him. I specifically asked there was enough recommended time between the bordetella vaccine they would be giving him and the boarding time. She said yes - Several days after he had been boarded he became sick with coughing, sniffling, having trouble swallowing and sneezing - I also suspected an UTI. I brought him back to Banfield. They did a quick exam and urinalyis but said I'd have to wait until the next day for results however they tried to sell me the meds right there (money). I said i'd wait for the results. the next day a receptionist called saying to pick up meds because pup had a uti - no vet called to explain a thing. I gave him the meds as prescribed but 2 days later he was sicker so I thought it best not to go back to Banfield even though I had paid for this "plan" - plan to take your MONEY The local vet did a thorough exam and said he had an upper respiratory most likely from kenneling and the urinalysis was still positive. He now had a fever of 104. He gave him a medication that would more effectively treat both illnesses. He also administered an injection of antibiotic so that the puppy could feel better by that eve - he did and is now fine. I have gotten the run-around from corporate and Commack. No refund in sight If you love your pet don't take him to Banfield

As I mentioned I contacted corporate three different days and got transferred, transferred, put on hold, transferred and no one had a copy of the original bill and no one would make an adjustment

until

Dr. Ari called me. He was the only fair, reasonable, knowledgeable, professional and understanding person in the entire organization. I hope he opens his own practice.

Your response to contact the 877 number that you list here is a poor effort to make it seem to the public that you may wish to help but you dont.

Again, thank you Dr. Ari

Banfield Wellness Program

I have just tried to cancel my wellness program after my one year commitment was up. They lady I spoke with, 188-649-****, ext 1815, Demanded for 15 minutes why I was canceling.

It was like trying NOT to buy a timeshare. For this reason, I would not recommend the program and my future VET business will go some place else.

One more corporate scam / bureaucracy where the customer needs to be aware of....She addressed me like I was doing something wrong and wasn't going to care for my pet.....Buyer beware, you will get what you pay for at banfield....If they sponsor such a program, than look out, it says alot about that company.

Banfield the so called "pet hospital" also abuses animals and treats them poorly. They don't give a rat about your animals they want to make the most money they can from you with unnecessary tests!

I have heard stories of them giving unnecessary shots as well, such as shots the animals already had and the animal suffers tremendously. These people need to go to ***. They put my cat through so much and all he needed was a WATER shot because he was dehydrated.

$400 for useless testing. I left without paying for the water shot which was $40 I think I gave them enough money.

Follow-up with Customers

Updated by user Oct 25, 2012

Guess What? I learned via voice messaging that Archie\'s expensive non-local urine test turned out to be no bacteria growth found in his urine.

It took 5 weeks for the results to be RELAYED to me. I learned Benfield has the results at week 2. Let me explain. At week one -- labs found not bacteria growth; at week two -- no bacteria growth; finally week three no growth.

So what does this all mean? He has no Urinary Tract Infection? It just disappeared like magic.

The stress and worry a first time person with no experience living with a dog had to go through was seriously devastating. I am too old and too tired to put up with such incompetents.

Original review Sep 24, 2012
Archie. of the canine race, has been suffering from a Urinary Track Infection. Timeline is....Day 1 -- diagnosed with UTI; treatment: Shot with follow-up in 2 weeks. Day 14 -- Follow-up appointment, he still has UTI with crystals & white blood cells in urine ; treatment: antibiotics given orally daily for 2 weeks. Day 32 -- Follow-up appointment, he still has UTI but with crystals in urine; treatment: two weeks rest. Day 47 -- Follow-up appointment, got urine and sent to lab and will provide results once know but should not take more than 14 days. Day 62 -- no word from Banfeld so I called. Primary Vet not in and will get a call from another vet about results of test. Day 64, today -- call again, Primary vet not in until tomorrow; message taken for her to give me a call. I asked if any of the other vets can read the results.....they will try. Waiting for a call; however, will not renew insurance with them once tern is over in April 2013.

My 4 year old dog is dead cause banfield vets ignored her kidney values

Banfield Pet Hospital - My 4 year old dog is dead cause banfield vets ignored her kidney... - Image 2
Updated by user Dec 30, 2011

Sofie was one and a half years old when we began taking her to Banfield Pet Hospital in Bel Air Maryland. We purchased a preventative healthcare plan for Sofie that included two complete blood work panels and one urinalysis per year among other things such as fecal...

Original review Dec 28, 2011
We started going to Banfield in April 2008....we took our oldest of three poms sofie there first. They did a dental and blood test on her.

Everything was going ok until may 2011. We took sofie there for her six month check up and got a blood test. When we went to pick her up one of the vets told us she was concerned that about her kidney values were high....her BUN were in the high 70's and Creatinine were high in range as well. She also said after looking through all her testing since she was going there she noticed that all her kidney values were steadily climbing.

She recommended we should go see a internal med doctor. So she gave my wife all the tests since she was going there and they were out of range since day one. I mean the range is 0-25 for her BUN and her first visit hers was 40. Nothing at all was ever said to us.!!!

When we confronted the chief of staff vet about this...she said well you cant compare dog values to human values. My wife said im not comparing nothing to nothing....ranges are ranges and she has been out since day one and nothing was ever said. One of the times when they did a urinalysis....every value was abnormal and clearly looked like she has a uti....but guess what...nothing was said. So her we are scrambling now after losing two years and we go to the VCA specialist.

We see there internal medicine doctor. She tests sofie and diagnosed her with acute kidney failure. This was in June 2011. So we started her on prescription food diet, medicine for her high protein buildup in her body.

After all this banfield vet was obsessed with us getting a biopsy of sofies kidney. The internal med said that is not necessary cause it will not help sofie...it would only be for us and we dont need it dont cause for one it would be a risk cause of her state and two we already know she has kidney disease. Then my wife and i made a decision that not one of our dogs will step foot in that place ever again. I called corporate and told them the story.

They called the banfield office and the chief of staff called my wife and she told my wife she heard we were not happy. My wife had a 15 min conversation with her that ended with them not admitting they totally dropped the ball and failed to report her blood work findings to us. She said i have nothing for you now but should have a resolution in a week. So i week when by and i started calling the office.

After three days i finally got a call back from the office manager. I told him i wanted all three dogs out of there plans. At first they let just sofie out and not the other two. I told him you cant seriously think i am going to bring my dogs there again after what they did to sofie.

Finally in October 2011 they let them out too. December 22 2011, Sofie got up and was acting not herself. So we took her in to the internal med and she taught us how to give her IV fluids....in hopes to flush her kidneys out. We did the IV fluids everyday.....On December 26 2011 we got up in the morning and she had her tail between her legs, threw up where she laid and wouldn't move, barely could walk, and her tail was turning black.

She didn't eat anything on her own since last Wednesday. She would go to the water bowl and wanted to drink but couldn't. So my wife and i had to make a hard decision and take her to be put to sleep that night. It was the hardest thing i have done in life and i haven't lived the best life.

That dog was our child...she was with us two weeks after we got married. I called banfield corporate office and asked them why do i have to pay for every medical bill after they ignored her tests. They said you have to get a lawyer....so they had a chance to try to step up and decided not to. You know how sick it made me when i called there offices and have to here the voice while i was on hold say how much they care about our pets and blah blah blah.

Everything im saying cannot be denied....cause the truth is in the records. Worst thing of all is that the chief of medicine vet is still practicing and who knows what other animals test are being overlooked.

I brought Sophie's abnormal values to your attention the first time I had seen her in years. I discussed my concerns and where we needed from there, and yet you reported me to the board.

I did everything I could help to Sophie, and you still reported me, and I was punished at your request. I am sorry you we're told earlier, but I told you as soon as I was aware that there was a prob!em.

Well-written, very systematic ... And utterly chilling.

All Banfield cared about was your money ... Not you and certainly not little Sofie.

I am sure you will be successful in court & hope you post the results here. Thank you for protecting my two dogs by warning this owner.

David G Biu

Banfield you didnt resolve any concerns...i dont know who gave you that information but its wrong. Letting me out of my plan is not "resolving my concerns". I think letting my dog out of a plan which where here test were ignored for two years isnt resolving nothing.

Guest

dlgentry25, we believe that the hospital team has followed up with you to resolve your concerns. If you have additional feedback, please contact our Client Advocate Team again at 877-500-**** or internet.inquiries@***.net. Thank you.

David G Biu

Are you a vet or a internal med? Cause our internal med doctor would disagree with you. I didn't put this on here looking for her history to diagnosed...i already have that covered but thanks for your 2 cents

Guest

I am very sorry for your loss. Just to clarify though: increased BUN can be due to many different things...an increase in BUN alone does not mean kidney failure.

CREAT levels are a more sensitive indicator for kindey failure. I would be interested to know what your dog's urine Specific Gravity was? Urine Specific Gravity in conjunction with BUN and Creat levels need to be looked at to diagnose kidney failure. The abnormailites that uou mention on the urine test in April indicate a uti, not renal failure.

The Nov 2010 indication of dehydration would account for the increase in BUN and CReat as well. By defintiion your pet wasn't in renal failure until April 2011, but I do agree that loooking back on the lab work there was a trend and that should have been investigated...very sad case.

Again, I am sorry to hear that it did not turn out well. :(

No compassion

When I took my bijon to ban field they had me waiting 2 hours before the diagnosis and another 20 minutes for an estimate which came to $300. They were also rude and trying to keep my dog. I didnt think he needed to be sedated so and was irritated with their treatment of my dog and me. I went for a second opinion at World of Animals where my dog and I were treated with compassion and kindness. They charged me $58 for the visit!! He didn't need to be sedated or cut up or stitches. thank God I went somewhere else. I'll never go back!!!!!!!

NEVER GET EAR CLEANING AT BANFIELD/BEWARE

Updated by user Aug 18, 2012

received refund so did not need to pursue litigation. The refund was for the services I had done at other vet hospital which banfield reimbursed me for. Happy to report my cat has made a full recovery and his third eyelid did finally go away and has little to no...

Original review Jul 14, 2012
TOOK MY ADORABLE AND SO BELOEVED 13 YEAR OLD WHITE DOMESTIC TO BANFIELD, SANTA CRUZ, CA AND EVERY TIME, CAT GOT SICK...GAVE HIM THE FRONTLINE AND HE GOT SICK SO BROUGHT HIM BACK AND PAID OVER $300 TO DIAGNOSE HIM AND SAID HE HAD URINARY TRACK INFECTION. TOOK HIM BACK FOR RECHECK TO BE SURE IT WAS GONE AND DOCTOR RECOMMENDED DENTAL.

WHEN BROUGHT IN THEY ASKED ME IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ELSE I WANTED DONE AND I SAID EAR CLEANING IF NECESSARY. WHEN BROUGHT HOME HE WAS FALLING OVER, COULDN'T WALK STRAIGHT, EYE SYMPTOMS OF HORNER'S SYNDROME (THIRD EYELID UP, EYE PURTRUDING, PUPIL IN EYE TO LEFT) AND WOULD NOT EAT OR DRINK DUE TO THE NAUSIA OF THE CONSTANT VERTIGO. TOOK BACK TO BANFIELD FOR FREE RECHECK AND DOCTOR HAD THE NERVE TO SAY NOTHING WRONG WITH EYE AND THAT HE ONLY HAD BACK WEAKNESS AND THEY WOULD CHARGE ME TO FIX PROBLEM CAUSED BY THEM AT DENTAL/EAR CLEANING. TOOK HIM TO ANOTHER VET IMMEDIATELY AND THIS VET DIAGNOSED HIM IN A MATTER OF MINUTES BY OBSERVING HIM THAT HE HAD AN EAR PROBLEM AND FOUND OUT 1/3 OF EARDRUM WAS RUPTURED WHICH WOULD ALSO CAUSE THE NERVE TO EYE TO BE AFFECTED.

NEVER GET YOUR CAT'S EAR CLEANED UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY SUCH AS MITES. I WAS NOT INFORMED OF ANY RISKS FOR THIS AND WHEN ASKED FOR REFUND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT GIVE TO ME DUE TO I HAD ASKED FOR THE EAR CLEANING. AGAIN DO NOT GET YOUR PETS EAR'S CLEANED! IT IS TOO RISKY TO RUPTURE SOMETHING.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH BANFIELD IS THAT THEY CARE MORE ABOUT MAKING MONEY THAN THE ANIMALS. I AM ASKING FOR COMPENSATION AND IF NOT GIVEN, I WILL FILE CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT. I WAS TRAUMATIZED BY WATCHING MY CAT NOT EAT OR DRINK AND ALMOST DIE AND WOULD HAVE IF I DIDN'T FORCE FEED HIM DUE TO THE NAUSIA FROM THE VERTIGO CAUSED BY EARDRUM PUNCTURE/RUPTURE...IT WAS TRAUMA OF SOME KIND TO THIS EAR AND SO GOD OLNY KNOWS WHAT THEY DID TO HIM TO CAUSE THIS TRAUMA. HE WENT IN PERFECT HEALTY CAT WITH PERFECT BLOOD TEST, NO PROBLEM WITH HIS LEFT EYE OR EARS.

PLEASE PASS ON THE WORD TO EVERYONE YOU CAN TO NEVER GO TO THIS HOSPITAL. I HAVE BEEN READING THE REVIEWS AND AM ABSOLUTELY SICK BY THEM. BANFIELD SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN FOR MALPRACTICE AND FOR SELLING DANGEROUS PRODUCTS. HAPPY TO REPORT MY CAT HAS GOTTEN BETTER FROM THE VERTIGO AND CAN WALK STRAIGHT, DOES NOT FALL OVER, CAN JUMP BUT HIS EYE WILL HAVE PERMANENT DAMAGE AND IS AND WILL BE DISFIGURED.

I SAW HIM TWITCHING THE OTHER NIGHT WHILE SITTING. IT SEEMS HE DOES NOT HAVE SAME BALANCE AS BEFORE WHEN HE TURNS HIS HEAD ALL THE WAY TO CLEAN HIMSELF. I SUGGEST THAT PEOPLE GO ONTO YOUTUBE AND GET THIS INFORMATION OUT THERE TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE AND GO TO 7 ON YOUR SIDE AND ANY OTHER MEDIA FORUMS POSSIBLE TO GET THE WORD OUT TO THE MAIN MEDIA. BANFIELD WILL TELL YOU THEY HAVE GREAT MEDICATIONS AND USE SAME MACHINES AS STANFORD...WHAT A CROCK!!!!

DON'T BELIEVE A WORD THEY TELL YOU AND FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD GOOD EXPERIENCES WITH BANFIELD I TRULY AM HAPPY FOR YOU AND HOPE THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO. I ONLY WRITE THIS TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE AND CONSIDERING ALL THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT BANFIELD, WITHOUT DOUBT THERE IS SERIOUS RISK TO YOUR ANIMAL IF YOU TAKE HIM TO BANFIELD.....BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tiffany, I hope you read this! what worked for my cat was anitibotic shots...totaling 2 shots one every two weeks. My cat made a full recovery and so you may want to check with your doctor on this...sometimes the eardrum is punctured so you want to be careful with putting anything in ears...my vet told me not to get anything in the ears ever again as there may always be *** in his ear...I did the same thing as you and thought that he might need ear cleaning due to him scratching ears and I know how horrible it is to see your beloved pet have vertigo...best of luck with a full recovery...I don't know if the antibotics healed my cat or not for sure but I do know that in about 1 1/2 weeks he had lost the vertigo which is the dangerous part because they don't eat...give your one everything that he likes to eat..shrimp or turkey livers...his favorite food and this may have also saved his life as it took something he loved to get him to eat

The same thing has happened to me at Banfield in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. My cat was under anesthesia to have her teeth cleaned and I had mentioned she scratches her ears so if they could check them out.

They said since she is under why not clean them. I wish I would've read this before!! It has been 1 week since the ear cleaning and she still stumbles when she walks. She is eating now but only "pate" food.

SHe looks like she is having a really tough time chewing up food. Thows up every other day due to the vertigo is what I was told??

So sad and all I can do is wait 3 weeks for it to heal and give her ear drops. I would also recommend NOT getting their ears cleaned

IfHumansHadDogsSouls - Yes, ear cleanings can be VERY safe if performed by a trained person. They screwed this up in a number of ways.

1 - If the ears were clean, they should have never even tried to clean the ears;

2 - Any person working in an animal hospital should know that an otoscope is a required tool when doing an ear cleaning/flush;

3 - Had an otoscope been used, they would have been able to address the ruptured ear drum before the cat even recovered from anesthesia;

4 - The doctor was negligent in not examining the ears after the cleaning;

5 - Many of Banfield's 'nurses' are people that have little to no veterinary experience and are paid minimum wage to help treat the pets.

Now, having worked in Banfields before, I am very familiar with their staffing and scheduling of procedures, so the doctor can't be completely to blame. There were some days we would have 3/4 surgeries (spays/neuters) and 6/7 dentals... All in ONE day. And that's not counting the 30+ appointments we saw throughout the day. (people wonder why they wait so long....) And staffing is a complete joke. We would be lucky to have 3 "nurses" scheduled on those busy days, and most of the time, none of the staff was state licensed to perform the aforementioned dental procedures!

Some of the doctors I worked with at Banfield really DID care about their patients, but were always in fear of being reprimanded if they didn't meet a certain dollar amount every day. The corporate offices/field leadership just sees dollar signs and not a loved member of the family. The doctors & staff were continuously over-worked because we were only given so many 'staff' hours per week... Why do you think the doctor turnover is so high and most doctors only last a year!

IfHumansHadDogsSouls

Ear cleaning is perfectly safe if the staff is trained to do it properly.

correction to my original post: sorry it was not frontline..it was First Shield which he got sick shortly after and was then diagnosed with a urinary track infection costing me close to $400 for running numerous tests. In terms of ear drum rupture due to unnecessary ear cleaning have not heard back from banfield headquarters/advocacy team. Have heard back from vet doctor at Santa Cruz Banfield and she has assured me that per banfield headquarters I will be sending me a refund which I am still waiting to receive.

Karen B Gfm

update: contacted by vet from Santa Cruz, Banfield and admitted that ear cleaning was not necessary and apparently manager of Santa Cruz misrepresented me to doctor telling her I wanted the ear cleaning although I had made it verbally and in writing clear only if necessary. I appreciate the integrity of Dr.

Smith and know how had this must be to be this honest and appreciate it. Have been assured of refund for services rendered by banfield and other vet to diagnose and treat which I have not yet received. Serious concerns of this manager at Banfield in this clear misrepresentation of my words/instructions. She had assured me she would be sure to tell doctor but told doctor otherwise, specifically causing risk to my cat which almost caused his demise.

Also concerns of vet doctor who did recheck in that the ears were not checked and told that they would have to run all kind of tests and I would be charged. Believe Dr.

Smith is a good vet and genuinely cares about her patients (the animals) and feel her integrity is a mark of a good person/vet doctor. Still awaiting refund.

Banfield will not let me cancel my renewal before renews

I tried to cancel my renewal with this company a month before the next renewal. They told me I couldn't do it until the renew date.

I asked if they could just make a note on my account to not renew. I was told no. So I cancelled that card and got a new one since they had that one on file. Now I am getting an automated message for me to call the number because there is a problem with my card.

- DUH I CANCELLED IT. Anyway I call back, I i wait for about 5 mins for someone to answer. They said I would have to be transferred to another department. I was on hold for 32 minutes and gave up.

I called back to Amanda and I told her what had happened. She said all she could do was transfer me and have me hold again. I asked her that since this was her company, if she could get in touch with someone and give them my name and number have them call me back. She said she was not able to cancel my renewal.

I told her that I was not asking her to do that. I repeated that all I wanted was for her to have somebody call me regarding my cancellation. Again she said that she could not cancel it. I was like- What the heck is going on here.

Do you not realize that I am not asking YOU to cancel this??? I am simply asking that you have somebody call me regarding this matter. OMG!!! She told me again that she was not able to cancel this that she would have to transfer me to client services.

I was like WOW WOW WOW... Really?? And this is the company that I took my pet to for 2 yrs????? And she cannot comprehend to just simply have someone call me.

This is the nuttiest thing I have ever heard. This location is in Garland TX on Garland Rd near the George Bush Turnpike. The girls name is Amanda. WARNING!!!!

Do not use this company, Run from them!!! They do not know their *** from *** in the ground.

Banfield sent my pet home dehydrated with no services performed

My experience started in March of 2011. I have two dogs and my husband and I signed up for the wellness plan. In October of 2011 we took both dogs in for a checkup, teeth cleaning and my black lab had an ear infection. We received a call telling us that our Mix, Kady needed surgery for a puncture wound and that our lab, Eliie needed a deep ear flush because she had a severe infection of the ears caused by "a very rare bacteria". Of course, we freaked out mostly about the puncture wound and told them to do what they had to do. $600 + dollars later we picked up our babies, all of their medications and headed home. Our mix looked horrible due to them putting another hole in her neck and sloppily placing a "drainage tube" in her. It took her about 2 weeks to recover. Ellie was sent home with $100 in meds for her ear. We diligently followed their directions with no results. We have fought the infection every since. On 8/6/2012 my husband returned with both dogs for a check up and to again, address the ear infection. They said that they needed her to go at least two weeks without any medication and then they could get a clear picture of what was going on and flush her ears again. He dropped her off today at 8:45am. He picked her up and was told that $500 worth of tests needed to bed done to figure out how to treat it. (but remember, she has a "rare bacteria") We approved only an ear culture and told them if that did not work we would submit to further testing. Our bill was $150. When my husband got her home she was dehydrated (drank about a gallon of water) and her ears had not even been cleaned. In, fact they were oozing with puss and blood. She is miserable and I am out $150 not counting the bill last year. I immediately contacted another vet and have her scheduled for day after tomorrow. And...I am pissed! Of course the doctor had left for the day and there was not a manager there to talk to. I am contacting my bank to try and stop the debit charge and will never trust my babies with them again. I just wanted to warn others and found all of the other posts. I am so glad that we got out of there before they caused more damage. Last but not least, I encourage anyone with similar experience to sign on to Facebook, twitter or whatever you use to communicate and spread the word. Also report them to the better business bureau. These people must go!

Original review Jul 24, 2012
Complaint Description:
My dog was sick, I told the Vet on Monday the 16th of July that my dog was vomiting for 3 days, the vet at Banfield ordered bloodwork and xrays, along with IV's / meds which totalled nearly $1100.00 in regular fee's, then sent me home with meds never telling me to bring Lucy back if the symptoms continue, I was just told to bring her back on Sunday. On Thursday I had to bring her back in as she was severly dehydrated, the vet again ordered more of the same, blood work, and xrays, along with IV's and fluids, I declined the Xrays as I told him we just had an xray done 3 days ago and the professional 3rd party examiner found nothing, my dog hasn't eaten since this time so what is the point of the xray, it was just another $220 in charges toward in fee's for nothing. So on Thursday I had a new bill for $315.00 in regualar fee's for bloodwork, office visits, and meds ad I was still no closer to knowing what was wrong with my dog!! I was told to bring her back for more of the same on Friday however my gut instinct told me to start over with a new vet, even though I had the Wellness plan that my wife entered us into for 1 year worth of premiums that offers discounts at Banfield. Once I told the new vet at Aloma Jancy what I had been through and the amount of time that had passed where my dog was vomiting he cleared the scheduele and did an emergency exploratory surgery where he found a complete blockage due to a perforated intestine and lesions growing inside the intestine. Lucy died the next day, she was too weak and had too many days of toxic bacteria exiting her intestines into her cavity. The vet at Aloma Jancy asked why didn't Banfield order "Barium" It would have shown the blockage on the xray. I feel the reason they didn't order Barium is due to profits, if Banfield orders Barium and an xray on Monday, they can't bill me out for multiple days worth of xrays, bloodwork, hospital stays, and other fees/meds for more visits. In order to maxamize their profits from my case they need to keep ordering inhouse xrays and blood work and drag the case out al long as possible, then finish the case with Barium, or a Sonograph and a exploratory. If they ordered the Barium or a sonogram or a endoscopy on Monday the blockage would have shown up and the only thing left to bill for would be a exploratory. I feel Banfields corporate attitude is to make as much as possible from each case and to do that isn't in the pets best interest. When I asked Banfield Oviedo why they didn't order Barium they had no answer. Both Aloma Jancy Animal Hospital and Shaffer Animal hospital said the Barium is always done on the 1st day when a case like mine comes in. I have read Banfields online reviews and I'm not alone in my feelings of their care.

I totally agree it's a ripoff they gave my dog 4 different antibiotics because they didn't know what was wrong with him so when I took him in for a followup after it was a different vet that said "why did she give you all that? he didn't need that only needed 1, well she may have not known." Really?!

But I thought maybe it was just that one time but Nope next time vet said under her breath "well not really sure what that medicine does but we can give it to him." I thought whoa wait I can say I'm not sure but you can't you're supposed to know. then wanted to do an x-ray on my dog which would cost me $216 and that's with the monthly ($38) insurance I'm paying... I said no let's wait.. I took him home with antibiotic called a reputable vet x-ray costs $90 regular exam is $27.50.

You can bet I'm not going to Banfield anymore, cancelling my insurance... I can put the $38.50 in a separate account and go to a real vet and use the money as needed.

I'm glad I learned my lesson before it's too late. DON'T go to Banfield you're pet will thank you and live longer.

I have been reading Veterinary Manuals on Gastrointestinal Obstructions, this is what the Merck Veterinary Manual says about "plain radiographs" which was the only thing Banfield wanted to do for me over a crucial 100 hour ...period. "Plain radiographs are often unrewarding." They go on to talk about other/ better methods of diagnosing the intestinal blockage here: Abdominal ultrasound is useful for diagnosing intestinal intussusception.

Transverse sonographic images of intestinal intussusception often show a “target-like” appearance.

Barium-impregnated polyethylene spheres are capsules containing radiopaque plastic spheres. They are being used for the diagnosis of GI obstruction and motility disorders in dogs and cats.

Flexible endoscopic examination is useful in the identification of foreign objects, mass lesions, and ileocolic intussusception. So why wasn't Barium ordered? Why wasn't an sonograph ordered?

Why wasn't a flexible endoscopic ordered? Why did your vets only order a standard xray? My friend just told me yesterday his Pug also had a blockage, there was all sorts of items wound up into a ball in his intestine like a make up sponge, string, and a few other things that I now forget but the point was even that didn't show up on an xray, the vet told him the xray is 100+ year old technology, the sonograph will show everything. The only answer I have for any of this is billable charges, you get more billable charges if you delay the diagnosis, xrays are probably one of your more profitable items at over $200 per pop.

While Banfield was taking their time to diagnose my dog Lucy, Lucy was growing weaker and weaker by the hour from lack of food and water, she was also having deadly bacteria exit her intestine and enter her bloodstream. I'm so pissed right now.

Banfield P

Banfield Watchung & Bridgewater NJ Disgrace

Banfield in Watchung NJ acted negligently in the care of my dog. The Doctor and staff departed from the conduct expected of a reasonably prudent person acting under similar circumstances. They misdiagnosed, mistreated, and mishandled my pet. Sending me away with over a hundred dollars in charges (above and beyond my wellness plan coverage) without treating my pet at all. I carried a sick animal, bleeding profusely all over himself and me out of Banfield and out of Petsmart without anyone seeming to notice. I took him to a private vet and found that with an infection, two open sores and a fever of over 105º he was near death. In fact the private vet wondered how he was still with us. Recently, after many calls to Banfield's customer advocacy team 1-88*-500-**** I was contacted by the NEW manager of the Watchung location. She was very pleasant and like everyone else I talked to she seemed sympathetic. She told me that there were so many problems/complaints about that location that corporate stepped in a took it over. I suppose they could see the negligence lawsuits coming and were trying to head them off.

Silly me, I thought I would give it one more try and went back to the original Banfield I had been with in Bridgewater NJ. I went after the infection/sores had healed and that was no longer a problem. My visit was a simple question of whether or not my dog had an eye infection. The Doctor who I liked up until this point was very brisk. She told me this had to be fast because she needed to pick her kid up from school. I asked about the eye and WITHOUT examining my dog or doing any tests she said ok its infected and told the tech to give me some drops. He came in and handed me a small container of drops and said that was going to cost over $40. I asked if that took into account my wellness discount. He confirmed it did. He then told me that it was the same medicine used by humans with pink eye and I could go to my neighborhood pharmacy to get it with a prescription from the Doctor. I called from the exam room and my pharmacist told me the drops would be $11. I asked if Banfield would match that price or at least lower their price some. No, we don't do that was the answer. I asked for the prescription so I could take it to the pharmacy. The tech said it would be no problem but the Doctor had already left and he would have it ready and waiting tomorrow morning. I didn't want to wait but since the Doctor didn't seem concerned about my dogs eye I figured a few hours wouldn't make a difference. I went to pick up the prescription and was told there would be a $15 fee for the Doctor to write one. I asked the woman at the front desk about the charge and she said very plainly that they make a lot of profit off the meds and if they can't sell me something they stock they loose money so charging for prescriptions is how they make up the difference. I had never heard of this and thought it very unfair. I told her to forget it and took my dog back to the private vet that very day.

The private vet did a few tests, looked at his eyes closely and then prescribed a completely different eye drop. She explained what was going on with his eyes and why she chose that particular medicine. I asked at that point if the medicine that the Banfield Doctor wanted to give me would have been effective. She said that in her professional opinion it was not the appropriate medicine for the problem. I prepared myself for another expensive eye drop but found to my delight that her price was very fair. How did I know that? I sat right there in the exam room and googled it on my smart phone. She was in line with most online pharmacies. She saw me looking up the prescription cost and asked if I would rather have a written prescription to take to my pharmacy. I said no I would take the drops from her. I did ask how much she charged for the service of getting a written prescription and she looked at me like I had two heads. She said she doesn't charge anything and she had never heard of a doctor that did charge.

It was at that moment that I realized I couldn't trust my pet to any of the Banfield pet hospitals and would switch to this private vet. I called the customer service center and asked to end my Wellness coverage. I was told that would be fine and I owed over $400, how would I like to pay. What? I have to pay to cancel? They explained that even though I had originally signed up for the plan in July (2004?) I had been switched to a higher cost plan in December so my dogs blood work would be covered. And since they had done hundreds of dollars of work on my pet since then I would have to pay the difference. I said I never saw the blood-work and more importantly the charges that they were asking me to pay were for negligent treatment of my pet. I explained in detail what had transpired and I establish that the failure of the Banfield Pet Hospital and its Doctors to act as reasonable medical professionals, not only didn't help my dog but actually caused him injury.

I graciously requested that I would like to cancel my wellness plan without penalty and in return I would not pursue reimbursement for all the private vet costs that I incurred correcting the mistakes that were made by Banfield. I received no response except that the request would be addressed and if nothing happens in three days it would be moved up to a higher level person. So ever week or so I'd call and they would say "Oh no one called? We'll move the complaint up to the next level." Now it's been over a month and I called today only to be told that my case had been closed due to non-response on my part. I told them that I had been waiting for them to get back to me with their "higher level person". They reinstated the case and now I'm back to waiting. In the meantime I am getting Banfield Wellness Plan bills and I'm sure the next thing will be collections. I am very frustrated and the next step will have to be getting some legal advice.

Hello,I had a horrific experience today also with my Dog.The manager LAUREN was.awful, she got me more upset than I already was.She refused to treat my Dog.I ended up St Westfield animal hospital, all the people st Westfield Hospital were very nice and helpful.

ILuvMyPet T

HI Leslie. I will say that in order to finally get away from Banfield and not have them come after me in collections I ended up paying them quite a bit.

If you make any contact or agreement with them INSIST on getting it in writing!!! Oh and BTW, I didn't get any real attention until I posted the story on this and a whole bunch of other forums and review sites. If you keep looking, which I'm sure you have, you'll see there have been a number of attempts at class action suits that haven't come to anything. I am sure that it has to do with the fact that Banfield has the strong arm of the MARS company behind them.

That's right the same company that makes candy bars. You can find the info on the MARS corporate website. Eventually, if you keep up with the calls and posts, you'll get a call from someone in corporate, NOT the *** toll free number thats nothing but a runaround.

Just keep at it. If I can dig up the info I'll make sure everyone and their uncle get the direct number so they get inundated with calls!!!!!

Guest

Hi, I am dealing with this same issue and currently am seeking legal advice. How far have you gotten?

I'm so surprised Banfield has not had the *** sued out of them yet. It's a horrible company.

Please reply and let me know what your current course of action is. I'd love to get in on a class action....
