I have had the WORST experience with Banfield in Overland Park, KS!!! I took my 6 year old shih tzu in for pain and not wanting to put pressure on his back legs. The took a 200 x ray on his legs which came back with nothing. The vet informed us that he suffered from a...

Not wanting to put pressure on his back legs is a lot different from screaming out in pain and being unable to walk. The next time the symptoms change like that, especially so dramatically, you should tell your veterinarian, just like you would with a human doctor.

He can't really rectify the problem if you never gave him the chance, and since our pets can't talk the vet has to rely on you to tell him what symptoms caused you to bring him in. I would have thought along the same lines as your vet if all you told me was that he didn't want to put pressure on his back legs. Always be as detailed as possible when describing symptoms to your vet, and give specific examples if you can. Those extra details could change the diagnosis dramatically, and it's always going to be less stressful for your pet if he's only got to go in once, especially with an injury like that.

Back to slipped disc problem though.

The same thing happened to my dachshund, and my grandma's vet (not Banfield) wanted us to pay for a ridiculously expensive ($2000!) surgery he couldn't guarantee would work. We got him back to full mobility for less than half that cost just by doing water therapy with him, supplements, and having him take it easy for awhile. Not sure what your plan is to address his disc, but I'm telling you water therapy is the way to go. Just get him a little kiddie pool and fill it to somewhere between his chest and his neck, whatever is more comfortable for him.

You can get him a doggie life jacket so he'll float or hold him up yourself by holding his stomach up with your palms. It works wonders!

Banfield Pet Hospital in Denver, Colorado - Banfield

I have a 9 yr. old lab/shep mix whose hair fell out and she got sores on her back after being treated there. Anyone signing a wellness is plan is mis-informed or out of their mind!!! They cost me a fortune, I have not been there for 9 months, but insist they did everything right!!! Two bought of prednisone that cause her to urinate for a month, 4 shampoos, and numourous meds., not including the overdose of thyroid med., it's amazing she is alive! She now sees a vet who comes to our home, costs less than that and does a wonderful job! ***, Banfield!

They gave fairly reasonable care unless they were seen by one young vet who thinks he knows everything and has his brain filed somewhere off premises. I was NEVER informed when I signed the wellness plan that it would be charged for a year even if the dog died that same day.

They upped my charges to a higher plan without my ok and refuse to refund that money. My pet had to be euthanized for heart failure (which their vet failed to recognize although I told him the symptoms and they knew he had heart problems. He said he had kennel cough. I had to bring him to the emergency vet twice within a couple of weeks.

When I finally had to let him go because he was suffering, they told me I still had to pay them for 9 more months! I had my bank stop payments and they call me 2x a week threatening to affect my credit. It's always the same story: you agreed to the plan, you agreed to the higher amount, we did all these things for your dog,,,need I go on.

I said, well, if you are going to charge me for his "optimum wellness plan", I'll bring his ashes in for your to examine monthly. They said that didn't make sense, they don't want my dog's ashes.

I said, well, it makes as much sense as your charging me for his "wellness" plan when the dog is dead. Always the same robotic responses. I considered picketing outside the store with a sign that says, "Banefield Pet Hospital - together for the life of your pet (their motto) and stuck to your bank account after he's dead. They will probably put me in jail.

I noticed you referred to the plans as "insurance"--that's what it was sold to me as, but toward the end of my dog's life they kept telling me it's not insurance, it's a wellness plan they we allow you to pay over a year and we give you so much....yeah right.

Anyone want to do a class action suit against them? I'll be happy to join.

I have had terrible experiences as well. The pet plan is bs.

They over charged me for seven months, refused to refund me for it and wanted more of my money to cancel my plan early. Do not go to banfield. Worst ever. The techs have no idea what they are doing.

They mixed up my cat's meds for his eye. Told me to give him the oral one in his eye and the eye drops in his mouth! Had I not reread it later my cat would've gotten sicker!

I think the worst part is no one cares. Every time you try to tell them what's wrong you get a generic message about how you are important but no one cares or fixes anything.

Banfield Pet Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona - Banfield - absolute disgraceful company

How I wish I had read the reviews before taking my yorkie, who I love to this disreputable company. I assume vets who can't get a job in a "regular " practice end up here. This is a clue people - stay away, run don't walk from this place. My dog was showing no signs of having an infection wheni took him here. The vet carried out an examination report and checked that his anal glands were normal and empty when in fact they were full and infected. They then when on to ram a thermometer up his butt bursting the abcess - still not noticing and declared he was fine. By the time we left there he was in excruciating pain, could not work and was bleeding. Two days later he was seen by a reputable vet who had to anesthetize him to drain and treat the abcess. Of course Banfield denied any responsibility, refused to refund me money and told me to fight them through the courts which I am fully prepared to do. They do not care one little bit about your pets, and they are certainly no cheaper than regular vets with great reputations.

If you paid attention to your dog's anal glands at all, they should never become impacted, which is what your dog sounds like it had since infected glands usually don't need surgery to resolve. Anal glands go from empty to needing to be expressed but not full, and then when they become full and are left that way for an extended amount of time THEN they become infected.

If the infected anal glands are not treated, then they become impacted and need to treated surgically.

I agree though that a veterinarian with any experience should've noticed straight away that the glands were impacted.

You know, if your Yorkie has a problem with build up in his anal glands, you should learn how to express them at home. It's fairly simply to do, and will save you a lot of money if your pet needs them expressed very often.

You might also check into his diet and make sure that his stool is significantly solid. If it's usually pretty soft or runny try switching him to a diet that is higher in fiber and his glands should express themselves.

Dear anonymous,

I am neither "high maintenance" nor a "raging ***". I simply expect a certain level of care for my pet and I didn't find it at Banfield.

I was extremely happy with the second vet clinic we visited, they actually diagnosed and took care of my dog and for a fraction of the cost I was quoted at Banfield for that matter. I'm just trying to help out those who are considering using Banfield so that people don't have a similar experience as I did.

Banfield Pet Hospital in Glendale, Arizona - Banfield makes canceling wellness program difficult

If you are thinking of signing up for wellness plan, be sure to read through some reviews first. I can't see how anyone would after learning the (disgusting) facts about this company. One common theme is people having diffuculty in canceling the plan, getting resubscribed for another year against their will. So I am calling today to be sure my plan is set to "no renew" even though my renewel date is not for months. The first rep ansered quickly, but was almost immediate annoyed, could not be troubled to talk with me. I said up front I want to put my plans on no review status. after taking my name and number multiple times, she said she could not pull up the account and said she would have to transfer me to the cancellation department anyway. So then I was on hold for over 15 minutes (big surprise there huh). Finally the account pulled up and I can not change the account because my wife is the owner of the accout. Never mind I am the credit card holder. Never mind I signed up the first dog personally. How convenient for Banfied I have to go through this again with my wife.

Yeah, they made me pay on my dead cat that they treated incorrectly, ignored my follow up concerns on, and misdiagnosed. They don't care. I tell everyone my story to make sure they don't make my mistake of trusting this company.

Yeah, you'll call them!! Hahaha!!

I've heard that one before. I have never in my life have a company *** me off more than this one. I left 3 voicemails with supervisors that were not returned and also sent an email that was answered. Only reply I got from my email was a letter in the mail of how much I owe EVEN THOUGH I HAD A NONRENEWAL ON BOTH MY PLANS AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS WORTHLESS GARBAGE INSURANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Am I yelling? Sorry. Worst customer service I have ever encountered in my 46 years of life. I am never one to yell at a customer service rep.

I used to be one, however these people seem like they enjoy getting you going! I never write reviews either, I just wouldn't want anyone to go through what I did. It is seriously sad that they could screw another human being like that. By the way, I waited on hold for 20 minutes with their cancellation dept.

I tend to think that does mean something!!

Doesn't make me feel any better that these people would STEEL my money. Just sad that there are so many ruthless people in this world.....hope you people can sleep at night.
