Banfield Pet Hospital in Saint Charles, Illinois - Ridiculously over priced

2.0
Details
Took our dog in to get an estimate on having one cyst removed on a healthy dog. This is a sebaceous cyst, nothing cancerous, just a very simple, straightforward procedure. After 30 minutes of high pressure sales pitches, the final quote was $1,300$. CANNOT RECCOMMEND.

You signed a 1 year contract. In that contract it states that If you cancel before the year is up, you either pay the remainder of the months you owe or the services you've already used, at cost.

They are NOT charging for services that they haven't done.

The WELLNESS plan is NOT insurance. You are paying a monthly fee to get preventive care that is heavily discounted.

The reason for the because people would sign up, use over $600- $800 worth of services, but they've only paid 4mo of payments and want to cancel. That's not right.

They performed a service so they should be paid for it. You expect to get paid at your job when you perform a service

For example. Let's say you are on a puppy plan. The plan is $42 a month for a year.

Total cost for the year is $504.

The cost for services WITHOUT the plan are: (mind you these are things that you don't pay for when you go in. It's the things covered by your monthly payments)

-Office visits $35- $50 EACH time - Vaccines $20-$35 PER vaccine & PER vaccine booster every 3wks. -Deworming $20 EACH time (pups need 3) -Fecal exams roughly $45 (pups get2) -Spaying/neutering roughly $200- $400 -Comprehensive exams around $150 -Ear Swab roughly $45 -Heartworm 4dx test $50 So you've used over $800 worth of services (remember the total plan for the year is $504 so it saves tons of money) but you want to cancel after only paying 4-5more worth of payments, which is ONLY $168- $210.

Again, that is not okay. They performed services and they have a right to be paid for them. You say that you paid for the services at the end of each visit, which is a lie if you were on a wellness plan.

Sure you've probably paid for things not included in the plan like heartworm/flea/tick prevention, nail trims, medications and testing if they were sick etc. But you did NOT pay for office visits, vaccines, fecal exams, deworming, heartworm test, bloodwork (unless it wasn't the common blood panel included in the adult plans), dental cleaning (if that's what plan you were on ) etc

Could you just walk into a human dr's and expect to be seen the same day??? Of course not.

Vets, just like human Dr's have a set number of appointments they can see per day & often book up weeks in advance, and have a responsibility to see their existing clients ahead of any new clients. Be realistic with your expectations and stop being a drama queen over nothing.

The Wellness plan is offered to new clients who go to Banfield for their pets so called free first visit/check up. This is when the receptionist mentions the Wellness plan. The front desk person also tells the NEW client they will need to sign up for the Wellness plan...

First off, no I don't work for banfield. I did for 6yrs, but I don't anymore.

The receptionist should only be going over the plan.

They should never sign a pet up until the doctor has examined the pet. Since its a wellness plan, a 1yr contract and not insurance, they need to make sure the pet is healthy enough for the plan.

If a receptionist told you that you had to sign up on the plan before going in the room and if you didn't, then you couldn't sign up, you need to contact the manager at that location and/or the client advocate team at the corporate office. That is not okay

Having said that, nobody can force you into signing up. If someone signs up, that is their choice.

They don't put a gun to your head.

If someone came in for a free exam, I would go over the plan (I was both a receptionist and a vet tech), and if they chose not to sign up, I wouldn't talk about it further. I always explained everything about the plan, including the cancellation policy, even if a pet passes away. I also went over the auto renewing, what is and isn't covered.

If someone didn't sign up, I would let them know if they changed their mind, to come back within 72hrs and anything they paid the day of the free visit, that would have been included in the plan, would go towards the membership fee and first mo payment. They usually got money back.

I never forced someone into a plan. If they told me no, that's it.

If they didn't sign up, that was fine with me. The plan isn't for everyone.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience.

I absolutely love the specific location that I work at.

The Veternarians and staff (both techs and receptionists) I work with are the most compassionate people I've ever met. They are in it for the pets, not the money. However, we are still a business and if we didn't make money we wouldn't be able to stay open. I work both as a receptionist and a vet tech.

I sincerely care about every single pet and the owners. Those are my 2 top priorities (patients and clients). I have been there for over 5yrs and I know almost every patient and owner who comes in, without even having to ask who they are. We only have 1 doctor per day working at my location and even if all the appointments run on time, we almost always still have people who want to walk in for their sick/injured pet and we do have the occasional emergency.

We don't want any sick pet to have to wait days to be seen, so we try our hardest to see them. We handle every single patient with care.

As for the wet eyes, the e collar and the kennels.. The wetness around the eyes post surgery aren't generally tears. It's the ointment they use to lubricate/close the eyes during surgery so they don't dry out.

The e collar, although it seems cheap (I thought the same thing the first time we ordered it ) but they seem to work pretty well for most pets. As for the kennels. They have a towel and/or blanket in the kennel with them. After surgery, they usually have a heating pad as well.

The pets are taken out multiple times. First to get blood/temp/heart rate &exam by a tech, then taken out again for the doctor to take a look and pre medicate. Then once the pre meds are effective, they take the pet out again and place the IV catheter, then they go straight to the operating table. After surgery we extubate and place them back in the kennel.

Then we let them rest and wake up on their own. I always let every owner know that the pets (not just surgeries either ) are taken out multiple times, non surgery patients are taken out to use the restroom if they are there for awhile, they have a fleece blanket in the kennel with them, non surgery patients get water etc. I want owners to feel comfortable leaving their pets in our care. I've sent quite a few really nervous owners a picture of their pet while they are with us and even show them the kennel.

Again, I'm truly sorry you had a bad experience. Even tho we are on opposite sides of the country, I always hate when someone has a bad experience. I just wish I could make it all right, it's the fixer in me.

I would suggest giving the location a call and speaking with the manager about your concerns. I sincerely hope that you have better experiences in the future
