The Wellness plan is offered to new clients who go to Banfield for their pets so called free first visit/check up. This is when the receptionist mentions the Wellness plan. The front desk person also tells the NEW client they will need to sign up for the Wellness plan...

First off, no I don't work for banfield. I did for 6yrs, but I don't anymore.

The receptionist should only be going over the plan.

They should never sign a pet up until the doctor has examined the pet. Since its a wellness plan, a 1yr contract and not insurance, they need to make sure the pet is healthy enough for the plan.

If a receptionist told you that you had to sign up on the plan before going in the room and if you didn't, then you couldn't sign up, you need to contact the manager at that location and/or the client advocate team at the corporate office. That is not okay

Having said that, nobody can force you into signing up. If someone signs up, that is their choice.

They don't put a gun to your head.

If someone came in for a free exam, I would go over the plan (I was both a receptionist and a vet tech), and if they chose not to sign up, I wouldn't talk about it further. I always explained everything about the plan, including the cancellation policy, even if a pet passes away. I also went over the auto renewing, what is and isn't covered.

If someone didn't sign up, I would let them know if they changed their mind, to come back within 72hrs and anything they paid the day of the free visit, that would have been included in the plan, would go towards the membership fee and first mo payment. They usually got money back.

I never forced someone into a plan. If they told me no, that's it.

If they didn't sign up, that was fine with me. The plan isn't for everyone.

So true... My dog, Penny, had terrible skin allergies.

I got the plan and it helped with some of the costs; however, Banfield dropped us when we reached an amount that equaled the cost of the plan. What a rip off!!!

I worked at a Banfield, but quit after 3 weeks. They took dogs from their owners and were very rough with them in the back, out of sight. I would never have taken my dogs there.

Banfield Pet Hospital General Surgery Review from Chicago, Illinois

I have been taking my dog here since he was a puppy. Everyone at first was polite and very helpful. Now it seems lately there has been numberous issues. To make an appointment apparently doesn't mean anything anymore. When your appointment time is 7am for sugery and are told that your dog should be ready around 3pm and yes i understand that sometimes there are setbacks or emergencies but when the appt. Time is 9am and you dont pull the dog in until 12pm and your dog hasn't eaten since midnight. Why would i bring my dog in at 7am and what makes matters worse is i wasn't able to pick up my dog until 6:30pm that night. Im sorry but what is the point of an appointment? It shouldnt take 5hrs to prep for surgery and if it does maybe you should find another profession! The receptionist are rude and short amd some seem like they have no clue what they are talking about. This location should seriously reeducate or revamp their staff or i will take all 3 of my dogs somewhere else that actually cares about my pets the way I do!!!

Sorry to say Banfield has become a big box vet care service to say the least.

Its all about the sales. I like in the Chicago area and believe me you have your choice when it comes to your pets well being and medical care. May I suggest you find a privately owned local vet for your pets medical needs.

I think you are not understanding how a surgery works. To safely prep & recover a pet from a surgery can take several hours.

If you had surgery yourself you would expect to spend at least 1/2 a day in the hospital....right? Also as the other person said I REALLY doubt a Banfield hospital would do less than 4 surgeries a day, so that Dr/tech will have to do all the prep for each pet.

This all takes time. Before you go off on a rant & make yourself look uneducated next time why not just ask them.....or do some research.

First of all, your pet is not the only one having surgery. On average, they are prepping 4-6 surgeries a day.

Second of all, your pet doesn't walk off the surgery table and out the door to your car. There is a considerable amount of recovery time. When you combine bloodwork, catheter placement, physical exam, pre-medication with wait time, surgery, recovery, and any additional services the pet needs that day, you are talking about a 6-8 hour endeavor, minimum.

It takes this long because they have a high anesthetic standard across the board, and want your pet to wake up healthy and happy. If you want a faster surgery time, use a clinic that has a lower quality of medicine, so you don't have to wait on bloodwork, catheter, and proper anesthetic monitoring.

They are probably correct. Call and get copies of all your invoices it has the cost with and without the wellness plan on the invoice.

Remember they aren't insurance. They are preventative care packages.

Perhaps I'm a bit picky as to a vets or vet assistant that's performing an exam on one of my dogs. However, I have a few issues concerning the overall medical education Banfield vet tech's have. Are the vet tech's required to have some kind of formal medical training...

The wellness plan is NOT insurance. It's a preventive care package.

There is no licensing for a vet assistant.

Only RVT (Registered Vet Tech) go through schooling and get licensed. There is a school for vet assistants, but it's actually a waste of money and you learn more on the job. You also don't get a license with the vet assistant school, just a certificate of completion.

Banfield hires both RVT and VA.

Vet assistants may not have schooling, but we are on the job trained and go through very thorough training.

Also, a license doesn't mean they are good. I know a ton of RVT (non banfield) who are terrible, but know a ton of vet assistants (both banfield and non banfield) who are phenomenal.

Someone who isn't licensed but had years of experience is going to know more than someone right out of school. Especially if said person has like 5-10yrs experience or more.

Hope that answers your question.

Totally just realized, after I wrote all this, that this post is about a year old. My bad lol

Banfield Pet Hospital in Chicago, Illinois - Not a bad place

I really have no complints with Banfield. Except when I brought my cat in for a dental cleaning that was made a month earlier, doubled checked the day before, and when I got there, they had the cleaning for a dog that had the same name as my cat. But they still took him in for his yearly check up... even with there insurence plan I still spent 119,.00 dollars for fle and tick product that i could have gotten cheaper right next door at petsmart. Only complint..think twice about buying the pet insurence, my cat diet 3 months later, and they still want me to pay for the full year... don't think so

Banfield Pet Hospital in Chicago, Illinois - Cat had two bad teeth and they said she was fine.

I took my cat to Dr Trice at the Kingsbury location in Chicago the begining of Feb 2014. I said she meows all the time. They charged me almost $600.00 for test, they said everyting was fine with her teeth. A few days later the cat was still meowing, i lifted up her lip to see a black tooth. I took her to another vet and she had two bad teeth. I would not bring any animal to this vet. After looking on line i find many complaints about this company from all over the country. When you call to complain they just have the Dr that screw up call you back. I would suggested that you find another dr office before taking to this one.
